Sixteen ceramic glaze test tiles screwed to a large wooden board, standing in the Morris & James pottery factory. The tiles show a range of finishes - ribbed, dotted, scored and mottled - in browns, blues, greens and terracotta.

Glaze sample tiles ballot

Ian Foote's Spartan glaze test tiles

16x test tiles on the board they hung on in the Morris & James factory.

Ian Foote made these to work out a Spartan glaze effect. They are working tiles, not finished pieces - each one a different attempt at a surface. If they look familiar, that's because these are the effects that ended up on Ian's beaten pot range and on the little houses. This is the board of the glaze finish experiments.

Close view of four of the tiles: three with a mottled blue and green glaze over a rough textured surface with a row of thumb-pressed dimples along one edge, and one in bare scorched brown clay.
